Smithsonian pegs
The official gold price has moved from $35 to $38. A March statute writes $38 into United States law. Major currencies have not yet floated.

In December 1971 the Smithsonian Agreement reset the official dollar price of gold from $35 to $38 and tried to rebuild exchange-rate pegs. The Par Value Modification Act of 31 March 1972 wrote that $38 figure into United States law.
Major currencies have not yet floated. That break is 1973, when the official price is $42.22. Private Americans still cannot hold monetary gold. That bar lasts through the end of 1974.
