Adam Smith
In 1776 he still described gold and silver as the money trade had selected, and the Bank of Amsterdam as a bank that took coin and did not lend.

The Wealth of Nations was published on 9 March 1776. On this site that book is the contemporary description of gold and silver as money the trade had already chosen. It is not a trading plan.
Smith could still describe the Bank of Amsterdam, in that same year, as a place that took in coin and did not lend. Later books showed the reputation running ahead of the vault. That gap is the Amsterdam article, not a view on what to hold.
